Bats of Latin America & the Caribbean

BCI's Bats of Latin America & the Caribbean Program is based in our western office in Tucson, Arizona. You can contact our coordinator for this program, Dr. Christa Weise, here.

Program Overview
Approximately 30 percent of the world's bat species reside in Latin America and the Caribbean Islands. Our program works through partnerships and collaborations to conserve species and populations of bats on a broad scale. Our focus is on migratory, endangered and endemic bats (those whose range is restricted to a particular area) and those that provide significant ecological or economic services.

Goal
To protect bat populations and prevent species extinctions by supporting and growing sustainable bat conservation partnerships throughout Latin America.

Program Objectives
BCI's strategy for this new program is evolving. It currently includes these approaches:

· Protection of bats in Latin America and the Caribbean by defining and prioritizing needs and implementing management and conservation actions through partnerships.

· Training professionals in monitoring, research, conservation and education to strengthen local expertise and increase local and international networking opportunities.

· On-the-ground conservation and research projects for priority species and habitats.

· Education and outreach to the public and decision-makers.

Geographic Area
From Tucson south to Tierra del Fuego – Our programming extends southward from the border areas of Arizona, California, New Mexico and Texas and embraces all of Latin America and the Caribbean.
